Barely a Catch-Up

obviously this is not everything I've eaten in the last few months, but it's been nice to take a break and not feel like I needed to photograph anything. Things have been a little wild round these parts but I think it's settling down. Still vegan, still alive.

                                              spinach, tofu, mushrroom, onion stirfry

turns out I've been at my dumb job for 9+ years. We get a bonus after that amount of time, so i went out to celebrate with a few friends who had also been there for the same amount of time. We went to malai marke and had a really nice time. I got the aloo gobi ghar ki, which was awesome. They have a separate vegan section :)

coconut rice, naan, Greg's hands - remember Greg?

apples, plums from the farmer's market

my sister was in town for a while, visiting from Spain so we had a lunch celebration at my parents' house. Her and her bf miguel made a delicious gazpacho, a torta that wasn't vegan, and a stewed chickpea + spinach dish that was very good.

                                                             Ginger Newman-O, plum

                                                              Haxan eatin my Twizzlers

a brunch Jarrod and I made: roasted teeny potatoes, tofu broccoli scramble, accidentally vegan crescent rolls (!) that we couldn't quite form into crescent shape. TRUST there was much coffee.

hung out with my friend Gustavo, who has a pet ferrett!!!! His name is Bebe!!! we brought the ferret to the bar with us and got him a glass of water.

random salad: tomatoes, chickpeas, roasted beets, spinach, hummus

my friend and I decorated Haxan with crepe paper. She was very patient and kind about it.

Sweet potato cinnamon roll from Body & Soul at the Union Square farmer's market.
Alright, that wasn't so painful. maybe I'll try to keep up the posting. Hope you guys are all well. Talk soon?

Keepin Summer Simple

it's incredibly hot in here today...

made a cold pasta/pea/arugula dish with lemon juice, pepper, and capers

and a more fall-inspired dish: lentils, steamed beets, kale with dill and tarragon vinegar

bought some Kashi crunch on a whim and am attempting to bulk it into a real meal. Here with blueberries and almonds, in almond milk

                                                   Italian tofurky sausage and broccoli

Kashi crunch, almond milk, blueberries, chia seeds

Gluten free raspberry cheesecake from Vegan Divas

frozen banana, almond milk, vanilla protein powder, coffee smoothie
iced coffee, Kashi crunch, frozen blueberries, chia seeds, banana slices.

Early August

Another summer weekend:

Here's Haxan chilling in the window of the vacated bedroom. I guess it's hers now.

                                                       Avocado toast makin a comeback

This is spaghetti since I didn't have soba or anything, with soy sauce, tahini, garlic, ginger, agave, red pepper flakes, and scallions. I didn't get any pictures of it after I added sauteed kale and mushrooms, but trust that that is indeed what I did, and then ate this 4/5 days that week.

There is an occupation at City Hall to fire the police commissioner (he has since stepped down, but only to take another job elsewhere) and bring more visibility to the Black Lives matter movement. There are workshops, rallies, etc. Jarrod and I stopped by the first day. I've gone back a few times since then and Jarrod has also spent time there, doing a workshop with his organizing group.

Nicholas Heyward speaking about his son, who was killed by cops when he was 13 in 1994.
It got kind of chilly the first night so we stepped away from the park for a while to get some food at Buddha Bodai, an all vegetarian Chinese restaurant. Jarrod, our friend Andy, and I split a few things:

                                                                Hot and Sour soup

"David's Special" - mainly veg seafood

                                                                   Kung Pao tofu

Peacefood chocolate chip cookie after lunches has again become standard

J and I made dinner before watching Stranger Things: brown rice, chickpeas, tofu, mushrooms, onion, kale, avocado. By the way, if you haven't watched it - and I am often skeptical of popular TV series - Stranger Things is awesome.

                                                             Jarrod making the popcorn

J breakfast: iced coffee, oats with berries + almonds

Sunday was beautiful, so I biked to the Williamsburg waterfront:

drank a V8 there and that was that.

Skies and Edibles

The weather has been muggy as hell. Spotty rainstorms at least make for some nice skies.

                                                                  Sunset from the roof

Jarrod and I made ourselves a nice dinner after a long weekend: sauteed kale and mushroom, pierogies, tofu, avocado.

A quick prep for the week: potatoes, carrots, kale with garlic, ginger, turmeric and red pepper flakes. This tossed with a can of chickpeas was lunch for most of the week.

Berry + Acai juice was lunch one day when it was too hot to want to eat even the meal I had prepared.

Kale-Apple juice served as dinner that night too I believe

another late afternoon sky shot, from the fire escape

The kale and chickpea dish ran out; I went to Blossom for a Chicken Casesar salad. I prefer my salad with it but mainly wanted as much green stuff as possible, plus enough protein. So this was fine. Creamy dressing, un-chicken, romaine, capers.

and dinner: avocado, tempeh bacon, arugula, onion, hot suace. quick and easy, that's how I like it these days.

Punks in the Sun

more eating out: too much. Groceries soon.

chicken caesar wrap from Blossom. Better than I thought it'd be.

Usually I'm all over the coconut La Croix but this apricot one was good too.
Jarrod and I and a few of our friends went to the beach the other day!! Would you believe I haven't been to the beach in near 15 years?

The day was super hot, the water was wonderful. We only lacked for snacks...
Later, though, a snap thunderstorm  rolled through! While our friends were out getting food, Jarrod and I were shielding our eyes from sand whipping up, and chasing down rogue book pages and towels. Jarrod also took one last run into the water before we were shepherded off the beach.

                                                                      wild, right?

hung out with my friend J after work one night this week. We walked around and talked for a while, and eventually ended up at Terri, where I had never been! He bought a tiny apple pie. It was pretty good, a little dry maybe. He also got a wrap and a sandwich, I tasted the sandwich, a fish filet, but didn't get a picture. The one bite I had was pretty good, though I think as he ate more of it, he enjoyed it less.

breakfast oat jar, minus the milk. oats, coconut flakes, chia seeds, almonds, frozen blueberries, strawberry jam. almond milk later.

finally whipped something up: sauteed garlicky kale and mushrooms, over lentils, with hummus.
On Saturday, I took the day off for a Doctor Know (from Bad Brains) benefit show in Tompkins Square Park with a bunch of old school New York hardcore bands: Antidote, Breakdown, maximum Penalty, Cro-mags, and Token Entry!! Oh man it was so amazing.

                                                                      Jarrod's shirt

                                                 Antidote!! From fuckin' Queens, kid!!

I don't often drink but I made this excuse... getting in the pit, in the sun, owning the Lower East Side, and pretending it was the early 80s again. Plus this show was good decompression, as it has been a hell of a few days - there was some apartment bullshit with my roommate so I feel the pain of Vegan Peace, who was evicted and is only trying find a place to get her cats back. There is a GoFundme page for her here. Help if you can, or share the news. It's an unenviable spot to be in.
Back to oatmeal bowls the next morning, though...

same as always - oats, coconut flakes, chia, jam, frozen blueberries, almonds. Iced coffee.

and a bike ride lead me to picking up this kale sushi as fortitude under the sun and in the sweat.
Hope you guys are well. Again, with the roommate gone, I'll be a little more comfortable in my own apartment so more homemade meals will be back soon.
